Education

I have a B.A. in German Studies from the University of Texas at Austin and an M.A. in German from Texas Tech University. I completed my PhD level courses in German Language and Cultural Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. This included an exchange year as a student and teaching assistant at the Freie Universitaet Berlin. My German is rated at the highest level of proficiency.

Experience

I've recently returned from a five-year stint teaching German to American students and English to community members in Quedlinburg, Germany. I have also been an instructor at UT Austin, Texas Tech University, the Free University of Berlin, and with the Texas Intensive English Program. I am private tutor and classroom language instructor with almost 30 years of experience with middle and high school students, college students and older adult professionals and lifelong learners. I have taught German and English as a second language to individuals and to small and large groups, to teenagers and to business people. As I have had students of all ages, from 11 to 81, I believe that anyone can learn a language in a patient and nurturing atmosphere. My instruction centers on communication and task-centered activities (how to carry out practical conversations, how to negotiate everyday situations), but I can also help with spelling, grammar and stylistics, if needed. I tailor my approach to the needs and learning styles of my students.

Hobbies

In my free time I enjoy reading in both English, German, and Spanish (I struggle, but it's entertaining). I also enjoy gardening in the spring and summer months. I like films and music of all kinds (I am partial to opera, "classical", and jazz). I spend afternoons and evenings cooking for the family and try to bake something fun on the weekends. I like finding new recipes and am always searching for the perfect muffin.
